Menorca has its own local gin tradition dating back centuries, rooted in the island’s rich history and unique cultural influences. The tradition of gin distillation in Menorca is believed to have been introduced by British forces stationed on the island during the 18th century. At the time, gin was a popular spirit among British sailors, and they brought their distillation methods and recipes with them to Menorca.
The island’s favorable climate and abundance of juniper berries, along with other locally grown botanicals such as lemon, rosemary, and wild fennel, provided the perfect conditions for gin production. Over time, Menorcan gin developed its own distinctive character, characterized by its smooth, aromatic profile and subtle citrus notes.
La Pomada, a quintessential Menorcan cocktail that highlights the island’s rich gin-making tradition. This iconic drink is beloved in Menorca for its simplicity, vibrant flavors, and its ability to evoke the relaxed island lifestyle. Menorcan gin, known for its smoothness and aromatic profile, adds a distinctive character to La Pomada, while the tangy sweetness of lemon juice provides a refreshing balance.
